How to build a capsule wardrobe

The best capsule wardrobes are the ones that last, not just for the summer, but for years to come; which means it's important that you choose a selection of scaled-back essentials that are both timeless and hard-wearing. Sometimes it's all about sitting down and deciding, 'what do I feel most confident in?' or 'will these pieces help prepare me for the busy week ahead?' in order to come to a conclusion where you're happy with everything you house in your wardrobe. Because after all, there is nothing worse than neglecting the pieces you no longer love, when they could be used for other means. This article aims to highlight what a capsule wardrobe is and how you can build one.
If you are struggling for pieces to include in your capsule wardrobe, this article is also the one for you.

What is a capsule wardrobe?

It is a limited collection of clothes that coordinate well and can be worn in several different ways. These items are often classic pieces in neutral colours like white, black and grey that work well together.

Where to start

Rome wasn't built in a day and the same goes for your capsule wardrobe; think of it as a step-by-step process
that requires time and thought. First things first...

Do an audit of your wardrobe

Go through every item of clothing that you own and assess what you wear all the time and what regrettably gets thrown aside. Always ask yourself, when was the last time I wore this? If you haven't picked it up recently when you need an outfit for work, or an outfit for those alfresco dinner dates then there's only one soloution, get rid.

The best piece of advice we can give is, think about your lifestyle. Do you work from home and wear a lot of loungewear? Or do you work 9-5? Are you partial to weekly brunch dates that require a lot of smart, casualwear? This will give you an idea about what you wear constantly.

Once you have worked all of this out you can think about the styles in your wardrobe that you love. Are there any specific pieces that stand out to you that you can't bear to throw away? If the answer is yes then you will start to gain an understanding of the colours you like, what your style is and what suits you.

Start planning

Next, it's time to get the ball rolling. Now you know what you love you can decide on a number of clothing items to experiment with. Whether you want a capsule wardrobe specifically for the summer months or fancy a trans-seasonal one for the months ahead, the number of pieces you add to your wardrobe will vary. Your lifestyle and how often you wash your clothes will also depend on how many clothing items you house in your capsule wardrobe. Also it's worth noting, there are NO rules! Do what you think works best and don't be afraid to choose many neutral colours or stick to all one colour scheme. However we would recommend using different neutrals so you can mix and match. Don't forget to pick styles that are the most flattering to you and your body type.

Get to work!

Lastly, discard the clothes that you don't want to include; the ones that do not fit properly, that are not your style or colour.
With any pieces of clothing that are left make sure they correspond to what you want in your capsule wardrobe.

Tip: Don't start your capsule wardrobe from scratch and declutter everything, start with what you already own.
Doing so is likely to make the whole process less expensive.

It's also worth choosing versatile essentials; avoid items that are on-trend as they are likely to go out of fashion once the season has ended. Some good basics to consider may include neutral
T-shirts, black trousers, jeans, outerwear (for layering) and dresses that can be easily dressed up or down. Also don't be afraid to experiment with styles in daring prints, the striped breton T-shirt is a good example of this.
It's chic and effortlessly goes with everything; it also seems to be a firm favourite within the fashion industry and crops up every season, owning it from summer through to winter and the months inbetween.

What should I include in my capsule wardrobe?

Knowing what to include can be hard because you have to experiment with different things before you know what works best for you. If you live in a four season climate choose clothing items that you will keep and use all year-round and choose a couple of staple pieces specific to the season you're in. Here are some ideas to style your look for this season – and beyond.

Gifts & Gadgets

V-neck or scoop neck, boat neck or high neck, the choices are endless when we think about choosing the right top. Whatever your preferences you can't go wrong with a classic tee, paired with anything from flared jeans for that off-duty look or a midi skirt and heels for your night on the town, take your pick from our recommended range:

- White and black T-shirts: Black T-shirts are a worthwhile investment. They are the building blocks of our wardrobes no matter the time of year. Many of us opt for one everyday, which is why our T-shirt multipack collection might be your best option.

- Striped shirts: Striped shirts work from the office to the beach thanks to their versatility. They can be worn tucked in, unbuttoned, knotted at the waist or layered under a jumper. Simple prints or block colours also work really well in a capsule wardrobe.

- Wrap tops: A really feminine shape, a wrap top works especially well with tailored trousers, jeans and skirts. Available in many prints and colours, we recommend going for a printed style that can be paired with neutral bottoms.

Capsule essentials: Jeans

Finding the perfect jeans is no mean feat, but great ones will last you a lifetime. When it comes to deciding how many pairs to include in your capsule wardrobe, there is no limit. If you love wearing jeans, you may want several of the same cut so you can rotate. It's also good to think about what wash you prefer. Lighter blue washes tend to be more casual, whilst black jeans always tend to be the smartest. It's also worth noting that finding the right style for your body shape is key, for example:

- High-rise jeans are good if you fancy a pair of jeans that accentuate your shape and sit extra high on your waist.

- Skinny jeans are ideal if you're looking for a figure-holding jean with a super sleek leg.

- Opt for a pair of slim jeans if you want jeans that slim your mid section and contour your curves.

- Tapered jeans are also great if you want to highlight your curves.

Capsule essentials: Trousers

Discovering the best trousers for your capsule wardrobe is not too dissimilar to finding the right pair of jeans. You'll want a selection of styles that work for every occasion and you'll want a pair that will go with the existing separates in your wardrobe. You might also decide to opt for more neutral hues that will work with lots of items including tops and outerwear for example. The types of trousers you might want to opt for may include:

- Wide-leg trousers: Effortlessly stylish, wide-leg trousers are handy to have in your wardrobe as they are as comfortable as loungewear, yet chic enough to wear to the office. Choose from black, white and cream styles in a range of materials including linen and 100% cotton and you're good to go!

- Cargo trousers: Go for a classic utility vibe with a pair of cargo trousers. Tapered fits create a flattering silhouette, while thigh patch pockets add a practical touch. Choose from versatile colours including khaki, camel and black.

- Ankle grazer: Opt for slim-fitting cuts in neutral colours that will have you looking ultra sharp. For off-duty done right choose ankle grazer trousers with elasticated drawstring waists.

Capsule essentials: Dresses

Easy to wear and effortlessly stylish it's easy to see why the dress has cemented its place in the modern woman's wardrobe. It's the long-lasting appeal of the dress that makes finding the right one an investment and dresses are the simplest way to feel put together. Plus, we often find that a wardrobe full of separates alone requires a lot of time and thought, whereas dresses are a full good-to-go outfit - just add shoes and jewellery and you're set. When it comes to thinking about what dresses to include in your capsule wardrobe, opt for plain colours (you can't go wrong with black) and consider your body type and the shapes that suit you. You may want to go for:

- A Midi dress: A good all-season buy, discover a host of midi dresses that you can style up or down for those summer weddings or christenings. Look for flowing skirts and flared sleeves that add movement to your outfit.

- A wrap dress: A black wrap dress is a must-have in every wardrobe, it's flattering and is a style that can be constantly reinvented through accessories and outerwear.

- A shirt dress: Tan & Accessories shirt dress. An easy and flattering silhouette, you may want to choose button-up styles and belted designs that are as pretty as they are comfortable.

Capsule essentials: Outerwear

When choosing outerwear styles for your capsule wardrobe, it's best to consider whether they can be worn throughout the warmer (and cooler) months, it's also good to think about how you will wear them. For example, blazers are traditionally left undone, so it's best to decide beforehand what type of fit you are after. Here are some good outerwear examples:

- Cardigan: Thrown over T-shirts and dresses or buttoned up and worn as a top with straight-leg jeans, the cardigan is the ultimate outerwear essential. Versatile pale colours will always work well in your warm-weather wardrobe.

- Leather jacket: Give your warm-weather outfit the finishing touch. Leather jackets go with everything from jeans to trainers, floaty dresses and more. Neutral colours like black and brown always work well.

- Blazers: Picnic & Outdoor Dining blazer offers timeless ways to freshen up your summer wardrobe. Pair with jeans for everyday sophistication or wear with a skirt to add some sleek structure to your evening attire.

Capsule essentials: Shoes

Shoes, you can never have enough and sometimes it seems impossible to let go of a pair you have had for a long time. However, as with clothing there is no set amount you should own when it comes to shoes, although it is worth thinking about the space you have in your wardrobe and your lifestyle. If you're someone who lives in canvas trainers but adores the latest designers heels, then these might not be the wisest wardrobe investment for you. When thinking about shoes to include make sure to opt for quality footwear that fits well, like these options:

- Chelsea boots: Choose styles which feature plain black or tan shades. Paired with an white oversized shirt and skinny jeans, Chelsea boots look effortlessly fashionable and are (most importantly) super comfortable.

- Canvas trainers: Opt for canvas trainers in timeless colourways. They're easy to pair with almost every piece of clothing and they rarely ever go out of style.

- Heeled sandals: Put your best foot forward with a pair of white heeled sandals, guaranteed to take you from the beach bar to the pool in style. And the best part? You can even wear these throughout the autumn and spring months for those night's out.

With time your capsule wardrobe will change and evolve and it's likely that you will add and remove items as your preferences change and the seasons roll by!
However, the benefits will remain and whatever you decide to add to your wardrobe, whether that be tops, trousers, jeans and more,
